Mantra-Yoga is a Yoga or union through powerful divine correct combination of a cosmic sounds vibrations or formulated spiritual waves or grouping of various words or alphabets / "Akshara" as is called in Sanskrit. It is defined in the great Indian scriptures Vedic and Tantric science as "Mananat trayate iti mantraha"—by the Manana (constant thinking or contemplation or recollection) of which one is released from the round of births and deaths, is Mantra. The Sanskrit word mantra  consists of the root man- "to think" (also in manas "mind") and the suffix -tra meaning, tool or protection, hence a literal translation would be "instrument of thought". Within practically all Hindu scriptures, the writing is formed in painstakingly crafted two line "shlokas" and most mantras follow this pattern, although mantras are often found in single line or even single word combinations. In the Hindu Tantras the universe is sound. The supreme (Para) brings forth existence through the Word (Shabda). Creation consists of vibrations at various frequencies and amplitudes giving rise to the phenomena of the world. The purest vibrations are the Varna, the imperishable letters which are revealed to us, imperfectly as the audible sounds and visible forms. Varnas are the atoms of sound. A complex symbolic association was built up between letters and the elements, gods, signs of the zodiac, parts of the body -- letters became rich in these associations. In effect each letter became a mantra and the language of the Vedas, Sanskrit, corresponds profoundly to the nature of things. Thus the Vedas come to represent reality itself. In the context of the Vedas, the term "mantra" refers to the entire portion which contains the texts called Rigga Veda, Yajur Veda or Sama Veda, that is, the metrical part as opposed to the prose Brahmana commentary. The seed syllable Omm represents the underlying unity of reality, which is Brahman.

            The most basic mantra is Omm or which is known as the "Pranava Mantra," the source of all mantras, existence of every things and cosmos. The philosophy behind this is the ancient Vedic idea of nama-rupa (name-form), which supposes that all things, ideas or entities in existence, within the phenomenological cosmos, have name and form of some sort. The most basic name and form is the primordial vibration of Omm, as it is the first manifested nama-rupa of Brahman, the unmanifest reality/unreality. Essentially, before existence and beyond existence is only One reality, Brahman, and the first manifestation of Brahman in existence is Omm. For this reason, Omm is prefixed and suffixed to all Hindu prayers, rituals and Mantras. While some mantras may invoke individual Gods or principles, the most fundamental mantras, like 'Omm,' the 'Shanti Mantra,' the 'Gayatri Mantra' and others all ultimately focus on the One reality. Once an imaginary self is created, we see and live illusions. The Vedas say: "The world is Maya or illusion". The world might not be unreal but the way we look at the world is unreal - through an imaginary self. Thence illusions are created. This turns into a death trap. But when we chant the mantras with understanding and devotion, the veil of imaginary self disappears and we start seeing truth as truth is and not as illusions: "Lead me /from unreal to real /from darkness to light /from death to immortality". 

              Mantras, the Sanskrit syllables inscribed on Yantras (psychic shape or symbol of mantra seems as geometrical figure), are essentially 'thought forms' representing divinities or cosmic powers, which exert their influence by means of sound-vibrations. The Yantra is an impression of mantra in the subconscious mind has great significance, one can focus on these during the chanting of the mantra and increase the effects of mantra or achieve the results faster. Popular Shree Yantra, Laxmi Yantra are also associated with related Mantras, it is said that if one focuses on the yantras, he still can get the same benefits as that of chanting the mantra. Every Mantra has a Rishi who gave it to the world; a Matra which governs the inflection of the voice; a Devata or a supernatural being; the Bija or seed which gives it a special power; the Sakti or the energy of the form of the Mantra; and the pillar which supports and makes the Mantra strong. Those Rishis actually prepared them and used them to prove their worth. Over the ages these have helped thousands of spiritual Sadhakas achieve even that which appeared impossible to them. Within doubt that whose chanting fulfils one's wish is a Mantra. Infact all the verses in Vedas are called mantras, it is said that any person who can chant or sing Vedas can achieve the ultimate salvation or union with supreme consciousness in this material world only by chanting the mantras. The selection of mantras is based on the nature of individual, his mind, physique and spiritual stage of development. For example :- Gayatri Mantra relate to sympathetic nervous system, so if a person is aggressive in nature and starts chanting Gayatri Mantra, he may start getting angry early as Gayatri Mantra triggers Sympathetic activities; likewise Mahamrityunjaya relate to parasympathetic nervous system; and Pouranic mantra (Omm namaha shivaya, Hare ram hare krishna, Omm namo narayana) They are intended to deliver the mind from illusion and material inclinations, which is the aim Mantra-Yoga sadhana.

             Mantra-Yoga is a easiest way to achieve difficult state of Pratyahara, that is Internalizing the sense oriented mind from external world and focus on inner consciousness. Each of us has an individual personality which can only be unlocked by using the correct key. A person who has deep subconscious fears and inadequacies needs one mantra while another who is arrogant, aggressive and angry needs a different mantra altogether. It is essential for Sadhakas, he  must have complete faith in the mantra, without faith even the medicine is useless, so absolute belief is necessary before practicing mantras. So When you chant Mantra with devotion, understanding, faith and purity, which is rotating your awareness around the combination of ward, this particular repetitive action leads to awakening powerful inner force, augments the Shakti or power of the aspirant, purifies and awakens the Mantra Chaitanya latent in the Mantra and bestows on the Sadhaka Mantra-Siddhis, illumination, freedom, peace, eternal bliss, immortality; if controlled properly this can lead to ultimate salvation or union with super consciousness; and emotion gravitate the concerned God or Goddess or deity and secure their divine blessings and makes possible a positive transformation. But this does not happen where there is rigidity. Rigidity is caused when one sticks to one's point of view; it becomes a source of misery. Stubbornness is a form of identification. By constant repetition of the Mantra the Sadhaka imbibes the virtues and powers of the Deity that presides over the Mantra. Mantras are in the form of praise and appeal to the deities, craving for divine help, mercy, gift and fulfillment.

               Generally Mantras can be classified in two categories such as :Tantric Mantras - This mantras has origin in Tantras, thousands of different mantras exists and they can be practiced for specific purposes, such as achieving wealth, health, success, curing specific diseases, longevity or even for doing bad to someone. But this mantras to be learnt from Guru and has lot of restrictions. The effects are also fast for these mantras. These mantras are difficult to learn. Pouranic Mantras- These are relatively simple and can be practiced by anyone, they are easy to learn and helps purify emotions of human mind. These mantras are safe, slowly the practice of these mantras leads to ultimate salvation. In Sanskrit texts millions of mantras are there, so the question is how and what to choose? So Guru is a perfect fair guide who can understand all one's problems and suggest or select intutively a best suited Mantras with the help of which one could get rid of all problems and evolve the disciple. Thus Guru is the best judge of the disciple, he knows his disciples inside out. Sometimes people see the Mantra in their dreams. But this is very rare phenomena. So always Mantra should be adopted by Deeksha or initiation ceremony. Deeksha Givers (enlightened Guru) have been empowered to serve as mere conduits in India through an Avatar. Deeiksha Or Oneness Energy Transmission is the transference of higher consciousness energy. Deeksha is a sacred process through which the divine energy of a mantra-nada Guru's personality is transmitted to disciple. This is not a movement of more teachings to create new doctrines. This is a Oneness Movement which only focus is to provide Humankind with an Enlightenment Experience. During Deeksha, the guru gives his or her special blessing for an individual to recite a specific mantra. So get the Mantra initiation from your divine Guru, Or pray to your Ishtam Devata and start doing Japa of the particular Mantra, if you find it difficult to get a perfect spiritual Guru

   Methods of Mantra-Japa (chanting & repetition) Sadhana

Mantra-japa was a concept of the Tantric and Vedic sages that incorporates mantras as one of the main forms of puja, or worship, whose ultimate aim or end is seen as moksha/liberation. Essentially, Mantra-Japa means continuous repetition of mantra, and has become an established Sadhana of all Hindu streams, from the various Yoga to Tantra. It involves repetition of a mantra over and over again, usually in cycles of auspicious numbers (in multiples of three), the most popular being 108. For this reason, Hindu malas (bead necklaces) developed, containing generally 108 beads and a head bead (sometimes referred to as the 'sumeru', or 'guru' bead). The devotee performing japa using his/her fingers counts each bead as he/she repeats the chosen mantra. Having reached 108 repetitions, if he/she wishes to continue another cycle of mantras, the devotee must turn the mala around without crossing the head bead and repeat. Mantra-Japa can be practiced in many ways. One of the best and simplest method is repetition of the mantra using a mala. A fixed number of rounds of the mala are undertaken each day as instructed by the Guru. This sadhana is known as Japa-Anushthana, where the aspirant or sadhaka makes a resolve to complete the required number of rounds each day.

 1st and initial stage of Mantra-Japa is called aloud or Baikhari (Audible) - By chanting a loud which can be heard easily. It is most beneficial and suitable for mentally disturbed, highly distracted, frustrated, and depressed persons. It subsides mental stress and strain fatly, removes material thoughs easily and controls evil or abnormal behaviors.

  2nd and higher stage of Mantra-Japa is called Upanshu (whispered) - Chanting of mantra in very low voice, or just whispering, so that only practitioner can understand. It is very purposeful and suitable for ambitious persons who wants to gain wealth, health, land acquisition, happiness etc. easily and also Destiny Errors can be corrected with this type of chanting.

  3rd and higher stage of Mantra-Japa is called Manasika (Mental) - without chanting a loud or whispering, mantra is repeated in mind, this type of mantra chanting is difficult and can be learnt only with practice.
This most powerful and subtle form of chanting Commonly used by advance practitioners which Leads to higher states of awareness and releases deep rooted mental suppression/complex from sub-conscious level.

  4th and higher stage of Mantra-Japa is called Likhita (writting) - Mantra is repeated on paper or any plane surface by pen / pencil or any thing eals gazing with eyes and concentration, which is much effective and suitable for inner visualization of cosmic truth in meditation.

  5th and highest or final stage of Mantra-Japa is called Ajapa-Japa (with breathing) - without any physical effort an universal Mantra "So-Ham" ("So" during inhalation and "Ham" during exhalation) are repeated / chanted with the synchronization of self breathing awareness or rhythms in one of the psychic-passages, initially between the navel and the throat centres in the front of the body. As the practice is developed, the spinal psychic passage from Moolardhara chakra up to Ajna chakra is utilised. Perfection of this form of japa is an essential prerequisite for advanced Kriya-yoga sadhana. It is a subtle sound of our breathing which can be heard at the advance state of spiritual evolution / perfection. It is most beneficial for higher spiritual Sadhakas to attain samadhi and enlightenment. The fruit of extended and faithful japa-sadhana is the experience of Ajapa-Japa, the state where the purified consciousness begins to reverberate with the mantra spontaneously throughout waking, sleeping and dreaming states. Then there is no time when mantra awareness is absent from the field of consciousness, not only in meditation but in the midst of daily activities, dreams and also sleep.

 Effects of Mantra-Yoga Sadhana

One can compare example of concentrated sun beams in Convex lens, the rays / beams can burn a paper if lens is used, similarly the consciousness / awareness can be made concentrated and powerful by repetitive chanting of Mantra. The combined effect of sound vibrations on physical plane can be observed, specially on brain, or on EEG (Electro Encephala Graph), one can see the brain wave emission patterns affected with Ommkara chanting, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Gayatri Mantra chanting. The beta, alpha, theta waves activity in brain can be seen systematically during the Mantra Chanting. When practitioner goes deeper, subtle and astral spheres in to the meditation states while chanting mantra, there is absolutely no awareness about happenings in surrounding environment. Only Mantra awareness remains - Even there is no self, the mantra & its awareness is present when practitioner reaches higher states. from that moment Purification of collective conscious mind takes place and Impacts on macro cosmos & micro cosmos. By regular use of Mantra a subtle link is formed and through this one could then obtain any desired boon within the power of the deity. It has the power to mold our nature and elevate our consciousness to higher and higher levels. Chanting mantras inspires the body to heal itself, the mind to become calm and the soul to grow strong. They unlock hidden promises, creating a condition where joy is integral to one's essence and silence is one's centre. Operating from such a center, life will no longer be a threat; it will be full of opportunities. Such a life will generate waves of love and ocean of love. 

 Benefits of Mantra-Yoga Sadhana

Mantra Chanting has soothing effect on Nervous System, stimulates neurological and higher potential hidden energy subtle centers; can be effectively used to reduce stress; help to relax the nervous, muscles and to dissolve the ego; impacts on mental & psychological plane in a positive way; Stirs up emotions like : desires, fears, jealousy, from subconscious mind to conscious level as thoughts; removes negative tendencies of mind; reprogramming the thinking process, and Creates potential energy reservoir; and help us build invisible tools for shaping a better progressive life and also. Practice of Mantra increases concentration, memory, logical thinking.    

           Rhythmical vibrations of sound or Continuous recitation of the Mantras gives rise to the formation of the particular figure of the deity, relax and concentrate mind, improves emotional stability; Some Mantras control and reduces antisocial, addictive, delinquent and criminal behaviors or evil spirits. various psychosomatic and psychological Chronic diseases can be cured by Mantras. Chanting of Mantras generate potent spiritual waves or divine vibrations. They penetrate the physical and astral bodies of the patients and remove the root causes of sufferings. They fill the cells with pure Sattva or divine energy. They destroy the microbes and vivify the cells and tissues. They are best, most potent antiseptics and germicides. They are more potent than ultra-violet rays or Roentgen rays. 

            Repetition of Surya-Mantra bestows health, long life, vigor, vitality, Tejas or brilliance. It removes all diseases of the body and the diseases of the eye. No enemy can do any harm. Repetition of Aditya-hridayam in the early morning is highly beneficial. Lord Rama conquered Ravana through the repetition of Aditya-hridayam imparted by Agastya Rishi. Repetition of Saraswati Mantra ‘OM Saraswati Namaha’ will bestow on you wisdom and good intelligence. You will get inspiration and compose poems. Repetition of ‘Om Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namaha’ will confer on you wealth and remove poverty. Ganesha Mantra will remove any obstacle in any undertaking. Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra will remove accidents, incurable diseases and bestow long life and immortality. It is a Moksha Mantra too. Repetition of Gayatri or Pranava or Omm Namah Shivaya, Omm Namo Narayanaya, Omm Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, one and a quarter lakh of times with Bhava, faith and devotion will confer on you Mantra Siddhis. OMM, Soham, Shivoham, Aham Brahmasmi are Moksha Mantras. They will help you to attain Self-realization. Omm Sri Ramaya Namaha, Omm Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya are Saguna Mantras which will enable you to attain Saguna realization first and then Nirguna realization in the end.

 Important guidance for Mantra-Japa Sadhana by using Mala (beads necklaces)

   One should have a Mala or Rosary consisting of 108 beads as is significant in all Tantra and Veda Texts.

  Use right hand's middle finger and thumb only to hold Mala pool the bead one by one backword. 

   Practice Mantra-Japa in meditative pose like : Padmasana, Siddhasana, Swastikasana, or Sukhasana.

   The Mala or rosary should not be touched or visible to others during Mantra-Japa Anushthana Sadhana.

   Broken or damaged Japa-Mala or beads should not be worn or used for Mantra-Japa Sadhana.  

  Do not cross Sumeru (offset beads) of Mala during Mantra-Japa Sadhana.

 Time of Japa-Practice should be Morning and / or evening time around sun rise and / or sun set period.

 Mental Concentration should be on object of faith (God/Ishtam/Yantra of Mantra) during Japa-practices.

 One can chant / repeat the Mantra with or without Mala while exhaling or inhaling or both.

  A particular type of Mala or Rosary (108 beads) should be

selected for the specific purposes, such as : 

 

     Rudraksha Mala -    This is generally used and suitable for the Veda, Lord Shiva or Guru relevant Mantra-Japa.

     Tulasi Mala -     This is commonly used and suitable for the Vaishnava, Nirguna & Satvic relevant Mantra-Japa .

     Chandana Mala -     This is specially used and suitable for Rajoguni or luxurious relevant purposes & personality.

     Crystal Mala -     This is essentially used and suitable for Tantra & Tamoguni relevant purposes or personality.
